Your Guide to Permanent Makeup Removal
Let's face it, permanent makeup can be a game-changer – defined brows, a subtle lip tint, or a beautifully lined eye can save precious time and boost self-esteem. But what happens when "permanent" isn't quite so perfect anymore? Yes, trends change, your preferences evolve, or perhaps the initial application just wasn't what you thought it could be. That's where permanent makeup removal with the PicoSure laser comes in, and as someone who removes permanent makeup daily (and I have even removed my own eyebrows twice!), I'm here to sharepe all the details.
Why Remove Permanent Makeup?
The reasons are as varied as the people seeking removal. For many of my clients, it's simply a desire for a fresh start. Perhaps their brow shape no longer suits their face, the color can fade unevenly, or they're ready to embrace a more natural look. Whatever your motivation, know that you're not alone, and effective removal is possible with just a few treatments.
What is Eyebrow Pigment: It’s not like Tattoo Ink!
The important thing to know, especially when we're talking about eyebrow permanent makeup. Unlike traditional body tattoo ink, which is often a single-color pigment, eyebrow inks are typically a blend. Your permanent makeup artist often mixes black, red, and yellow to create that perfect shade of brown or blonde.
Why does this matter for removal? Because as the PicoSure laser works its magic, breaking down the pigment particles, you might notice a fascinating (and sometimes surprising) color change. It's common for the brow to go through stages, often turning red, and then yellow, before the pigment fully dissipates. This is a normal part of the process and a good indication that the treatment is working. Don't be alarmed if your brows look a little red, orange or yellow during your journey – it's just the pigment breaking down!
The Removal Process: What to Expect
The actual removal process involves using the PicoSure laser (Pico lasers flash at 750 pulses per second) that is attracted to the pigment in your skin. The laser energy breaks the ink into tiny particles, which your body then naturally flushes away through the lymphatic system.
Each session is fast, and while you might feel a sensation similar to a rubber band snapping against your skin, most people tolerate it well. Ice and Tylenol help greatly for before and after the procedure.
Aftercare: It’s easy!
One of the pleasant surprises for many of my clients is how manageable the aftercare is for permanent makeup removal, particularly for eyebrows. You can expect:
Mild redness and swelling: This is completely normal and typically subsides within 24 hours.
Minimal downtime: You can usually resume most of your normal activities right away.
Makeup is your friend: You can often apply makeup to the treated area 24 hours post-treatment to cover any lingering redness.
Hair re-dyeing: Want to touch up your natural brow hair color? Yes, you can! You can even redye your brow hair 24 hours after treatment if desired. The laser can remove the pigment of the hair follicle, but it is not a hair removal laser. Don’t worry.
The Treatment Timeline: Patience is Key
Permanent makeup removal is a journey. Please allow your skin to heal and your body to naturally eliminate the pigment, treatments are spaced 6 weeks apart. The number of sessions required will vary depending on factors like the depth and saturation of the original pigment, the colors used, the age of the eyebrows, and your individual response to treatment.
New Permanent Makeup
So, your old permanent makeup is gone, and you're ready for a fresh start. That's fantastic! However, I recommend you wait at least 2-3 months after your final removal session before getting new permanent makeup. This gives your skin ample time to fully heal and regenerate, ensuring the best possible canvas for your new application.
Do Your Research!
This is perhaps the most critical piece of advice I can offer. Whether you're considering permanent makeup for the first time or looking to get a new application after removal, do your research! Look at portfolios, read reviews, and ask for consultations. A skilled and experienced artist will be able to guide you through the process and achieve the results you desire.
